Beaches: the warmest will be in the south; Sicily and the Amalfi Coast. There are some 45 minutes away from Rome though, if you’re only visiting the capital

Other information:

  • Bus tickets have to be bought on the bus from a machine, generally you’re not policed on this and could theoretically get on for free, but if the inspectors come, you’re liable for a hefty fine
  • Ignore the huge queue by the Colosseum for your ticket and go buy it for the Roman Forum instead. The ticket you buy from there (reduced for EU citizens) will get you access into the Colosseum too.
  • If you’re going to Milan, book in advance to see the Last Supper painting
